Butler Hospital is the state's only non-profit, free-standing psychiatric hospital providing adults, seniors and adolescents specialized assessment and treatment for all major psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse.

Butler is the major affiliated teaching hospital for psychiatry and behavioral health of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. It is the flagship hospital for its Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, which has been recognized by its peers as one of the top ten in the US. Butler is the major training site and the base hospital for the Brown University General Residency in Psychiatry. Many physicians and psychologists at Butler are also part of the Brown Institute for Brain Science and participate in exciting clinical research initiatives with this world-renowned center for neuroscience. A national leader in the development of acute psychiatric and substance abuse treatment, Butler is involved in a variety of research efforts which has earned it a national reputation as a major teaching and research facility, including:

What They Leave Behind Family & Friends Support Group: A support group for family and friends of those who have lost someone to overdose. The free program is hosted by Project Weber/RENEW in loving memory of Joseph Cintron. Located at 200 Allens Avenue, Second floor, Providence, RI SS (Suicide Survivors) Hope Group: Peer led support group for people who have lost someone to suicide. This survivor's support group has provided comfort and encouragement to its members for the past eight years and includes participants in various stages of suicide grief recovery. Description
Senior Inpatient Treatment Unit: Inpatient services for adults age 65 years and older, the geriatric unit is led by a specialized treatment team well versed in conditions such as Alzheimerâs and other cognitive disorders as well as depression, anxiety and other mood or psychotic disorders that may cause behavioral difficulties. The clinical team works to stabilize the patient for return home or to an assisted living campus with a comprehensive transition of care process. Memory and Aging Program: An internationally renowned research program dedicated to developing breakthroughs in prevention and treatments for Alzheimerâs disease, while this is not a clinical care program, it offers hope to those at risk or exhibiting memory loss symptoms. With multiple research trials underway, including registry for future studies, participants are people with normal memory who may be at jeopardy for dementia and those who are already experiencing signs of cognitive decline.

Description
Hospital charity care requirements cover those essential services necessary to diagnose, correct, or cure a medical condition that endangers life, causes pain and suffering, results in illness or infirmity, or causes a physical deformity or malfunction. Both inpatient and outpatient services are included. To receive full charity care, patients annual family income must be up to and including 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. For partial charity care, patients annual family income must be between 200% and 300% of the Federal Poverty Level may receive assistance based on a sliding scale. In addition to income, hospitals have the option to consider other assets. Also must be denied from Medicaid first depending on income. Patients who get accepted will receive financial aid for a year. **For patients who feel that an application or appeal was wrongfully denied should call the RI Dept of Health info line 222-5960.
