Adult Guardianship Assistance

Description

Guardianship is a legal arrangement through which the Guardian is authorized to make certain decisions for another person. Works with the probates courts to match people age 60 years or older living in care facilities with certain cognitive conditions to caring volunteer guardians, when they are needed

    Description

    Department prefers that all calls go through main number. Housing Security Program, Joyce Torrice, 462-0539 Heating Assistance Program **R.I. Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (RIPAE) Provides discounts on drugs for limited income persons 65+ and disabled persons. **Customer Information Assistance and Referral Unit **Home and Community Care Provides homemaker/home health aide services for limited income persons 65+, either on a free or co-pay basis. **Protective Abuse Unit Investigates reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation and self-neglect among persons 60+. **Senior Companion Program, Maria Agonia (401) 462-0569 Provides opportunities for federally subsidized job training and employment for limited income persons 55+. **Silver Haired Legislature Provides a forum for seniors to meet, debate issues, and recommend legislation to the governor, general assembly and the U.S. Congress.

    Elder/Dependent Adult Abuse Reporting

    Description

    DEA Protective Services Unit is responsible for investigating complaints of elderly abuse of Rhode Islanders 60 and older by a family member, caregiver or person with duty of care.. Abuse may include physical, emotional, sexual, financial exploitation, or abandonment. The DEA Protective Services Unit develops a care plan to prevent additional abuse and address the elder’s social service needs. Self-Neglect occurs when a person is no longer able to care for himself/herself. Reports of self-neglect are also made to the DEA Protective Services Unit. The senior’s needs are assessed and necessary services are 0ffered.

      Government Subsidized Prescription Drug Benefits

      Description

      RIPAE pays a portion of the cost for approved medications purchased during the deductible phase of a Medicare Part D plan and may offer partial reimbursement to those who enter the "donut hole".

        In Home Assistance

        Description

        @Home Cost Share: For older adults with care needs, the @Home Cost-Share program is available to help with some care expenses. Eligible participants can access in-home services – such as help with housekeeping, meal preparation or personal care – and/or community-based programming at adult day health centers at a reduced rate. You may be eligible for the program if you are age 65 or older, meet income guidelines, and need some assistance in the home with your personal or health care.

          Medicare Fraud Reporting

          Description

          RI Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Educates and assists Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, and caregivers throughout Rhode Island to protect personal healthcare information, detect healthcare errors, waste, fraud, and abuse, and to resolve suspected instances of healthcare fraud, errors or abuse. To report Medicare fraud, waste or abuse, call Rhode Island SMP at 462-0560.

              Senior Companion Program

              Description

              volunteers are people age 55 and older who provide companionship for frail older adults in the home, at day centers, or other community sites. Companions assist with daily tasks, helping those served to remain living in the community for longer. Companions may provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping assistance, meal preparation, and advocacy. They also provide respite to caregivers of frail elders. By remaining active and contributing to their communities, Companions benefit from the program along with the clients they serve.
