Portsmouth EMA maintains a corps of dedicated, trained and credentialed citizen volunteers who actively participate in emergency operations. The primary requirement for every EMA volunteer is a sincere desire to help one!€™s neighbors in time of need. Becoming a member of the EMA volunteer corps requires a commitment of time, talent, and energy.
Volunteers participate in independent self-paced on-line training, instructor-led classroom training, exercises, and actual emergency operations. Because every role in the EMA volunteer corps is a position of public trust, EMA volunteers are screened through a background check conducted by the Portsmouth Police Department.

Volunteers are needed in each of these Portsmouth EMA operational units:

Internet Public Information (IPI) Unit !€“ Members of this unit work in the Portsmouth Emergency Operations Center (EOC.) During an emergency the IPI team uses the Portsmouth EMA web site, Facebook, Twitter and other social media tools to deliver real time emergency information to the public. The IPI team also monitors social media during the event to increase situational awareness in the EOC. Skills needed are familiarity with Windows-based computers, web browsing, Facebook, and Twitter. Training requirements include 3 self-paced on-line FEMA courses and an instructor-led classroom orientation session.

Emergency Communications (EmComm) Unit !€“ Members of this unit work in the Portsmouth Emergency Operations Center (EOC.) During an emergency this unit is responsible for all emergency communications traffic in and out of the EOC. A General or Extra class Amateur radio license is required for this position. Training requirements include 2 self-paced on-line FEMA courses and and 2 instructor-led classroom sessions.

Commodity Point of Distribution (POD) Unit !€“ Members of this unit work in the field at pre-designated POD sites. POD!€™s are locations where life-sustaining commodities such as food, water, tarps, etc are distributed when the normal supply chain has been disrupted. Positions include POD Manager, Support Team Leader, Load Team Leader, Traffic Controller, Pallet Jack Operator, and Loaders. Specialty skill position: Fork Lift Operator. Training requirements vary, dependent on position. All members receive an instructor-led orientation session.

Medical Emergency Distribution System Point of Dispensing (MEDS POD) Unit !€“ Members of this unit work in the field at pre-designated MEDS POD sites. MEDS POD!€™s are locations where medicine is dispensed in the event of a public health emergency. This unit is a cooperative effort between Portsmouth EMA, Portsmouth Fire Department, RI Department of Health, and the US CDC. Volunteers of many disciplines are needed in this unit, from parking lot attendants to pharmacists, nurses and physicians. Training is conducted on site by the RI Department of Health.
