Description:

Family Court focuses special attention on individual and social problems concerning families and children. Consequently, its goals are to assist, to protect, and if possible, to restore families whose unity or well-being is threatened. The Family Court maintains a voluntary adoption reunion registry.

The Family Court maintains a voluntary adoption reunion registry. The registry is located on the second floor, Juvenile Department, in the Garrahy Judicial Complex.

Eligibility

Persons eligible to register are: adult adoptees (age twenty-one (21) and over) who were born and adopted in the State of Rhode Island; birth-parents who surrendered a child for adoption in the State of Rhode Island; adult genetic sibling of adoptee; adoptive parents of deceased adoptee; and parent or adult siblings of deceased birth-parent.

Intake Procedure

Turn in voluntary registration application and affidavit, available online, to Juvenile Department at the Garrahy Judicial Complex.

    Description

    CASA: Provides advocacy in court for the best interests of children who are the victims of abuse and/or neglect and are therefore involved with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and the Rhode Island Family Court. Staff includes attorney, guardians ad litem and Social Caseworkers. Program also trains volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates.

    Eligibility

    Children who had been abused and/or neglected, and who, through no fault of their own, found themselves involved with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and the Family Court. Volunteers must be 21 years of age and a United States citizen, have a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to travel throughout the state on CASA-related business. Able to complete 30 hours of comprehensive training, and devote approximately 8-10 hours per month to each case. Average caseload is 1-2.

      A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a trained citizen appointed by the Chief Judge of the Rhode Island Family Court to represent the best interests of a child victim in cases of abuse and/or neglect.
