Description:

Works to eliminate childhood lead poisoning through education, parent support and advocacy. The project coordinates the Get the Lead Out Coalition (GLOC), a membership organization of environmental, housing, health, social service providers and advocates promoting public policy changes. The project staffs OPAL (Organized Parents Against Lead)-parents working together to push for better programs and services to protect children from lead. The project has also implemented a range of community based education initiatives to promote public awareness of lead poisoning, including contracts with the cities of Providence and East Providence.

Description

LeadSafe Homes Program was developed to help eliminate the dangers of lead in the property. Funds are available to properties built before 1978, properties with pregnant women and children under the age of six, and home-based daycares or foster homes that may contain lead paint. There are no out of pocket expenses or monthly payments. Funds are grants/loans and loans are forgiven after 5 years for owner-occupied properties and 10 years for rental properties. Improvements may include new windows and doors, interior and exterior painting and lead safe yards and play areas.
