The Blackstone Valley Community Action Program (BVCAP) is a non-profit agency and a member of the nation-wide network of Community Action Programs. Our mission is to assist low-moderate income people and empower them to become self-reliant, responsible citizens. Our programs are funded through federal, state and local grants.

Each year BVCAP serves over 12,000 families living in Pawtucket, Central Falls, Cumberland, Lincoln and Woonsocket. Our staff of over fifty people reflects the ethnic diversity of our community, enabling us to be sensitive to our clients!€™ culture and language, and to provide them with the best possible support.

BVCAP continues to impact the quality of life in our community by improving housing options for low income families, preparing youth and adults to be educated, productive workers, and providing jobs for over fifty people within our organization.

Description

Classes are offered to assist students with academic skills development, and GED preparation. Areas of study include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Class time and schedule is determined by the instructors after potential students take an assessment (pretest) in Reading and Mathematics. All academic classes include the following: -Work Readiness Skills -College Readiness Skills -Financial Literacy -Basic Computer Skills -Touch Typing Skills -Accuplacer Preparation -NorthStar Digital Literacy -Food Safety (for students of BVCAP) -Internship / Job Shadowing Opportunities Tutoring is also offered to students of BVCAP by appointment. BVCAP also offers educational workshops: -Fast Math consists of math workshops that will help to boost students’ math skills, reinforce math concepts, and provide study sessions for the math portion of the GED exam. -Writers’ workshop is series of writing workshops dedicated to the essential topics in writing. These workshops help boost students’ skills in the areas of grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, and essay writing.

Description

Project Undercover believes that every child has the right to be clean and dry. That’s why we provide free diapers, socks, underwear and baby wipes to help the approximately 45,000 children throughout Rhode Island living in poverty. Clients are able to receive one package of diapers every 30 days for each child under the age of 3. Diapers are available for pickup on weekdays between 9am and 1pm. Description

Appliance Management Program (AMP) BVCAP offers a comprehensive electrical energy audit on households that already qualify for LIHEAP. The program focuses on determining the electrical usage of appliances and installation of energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Through the help of National Grid, BVCAP may be able to replace appliances free of charge to those who qualify.

Description

The ESL class is designed for learners who are literate in their native language and already have basic literacy skills in English. BVCAP’s ESL program helps students learn English for life, work, and community. This class also provides learners with financial literacy skills and basic computer skills. BVCAP’s Healthy Families America (HFA) is a long term family visiting program for expectant mothers or families with children under three months of age. It is meant to promote positive growth and development in children while building the strengths of their families and protective factors. HFA aims to: -Reduce child maltreatment; -Improve parent-child interactions and children’s social-emotional well-being; -Increase school readiness; -Promote child physical health and development; -Promote positive parenting; -Promote family self-sufficiency; -Increase access to primary care medical services and community services; and decrease child injuries and emergency department use.

Description

Fair Housing Advocacy BVCAP’s Housing Advocate provides counseling and referrals to clients regarding allegations of housing discrimination and violations of the Rhode Island Landlord – Tenant Act. LeadSafe Homes Program Available to homeowners and tenants with young children or those who are planning to renovate or remodel their homes, our LeadSafe Homes initiative can help eliminate the dangers of lead in your home. A case manager can assist homeowners in obtaining a Certificate of Conformance, Lead Safe Certificate, and funding to make their homes lead safe. Lead Poisoning Case Management The BVCAP Lead Center provides non-medical case management to families with lead-poisoned children, assisting the families with tools, resources and education needed to reduce the child’s Blood Lead Level to a medically acceptable level. A case manager is also available to help a homeowner apply for the RI Housing LeadSafe Homes Program.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides opportunities for seniors 55+ to share their time, experience, knowledge and interests with others in the community. RSVP volunteers are connected to networks of seniors who use their skills to provide services and support throughout the community. RSVP volunteers: -Provide administrative support, nutrition education, SNAP resources, and community referrals for hunger -Deliver meals to home bound clients 5 days a week -Provide home visits and companionship to homebound clients -Participate with the Wellness Initiatives exercise trainings such as armchair aerobics, water aerobics, line dancing, and tap dancing at Senior Services in Woonsocket -Assist in ongoing recruitment, enrollment, and program management of A Matter of Balance (an Evidence Based Fall Prevention Program) -Collect, sort, recycle, reuse, or repurpose recyclable materials in Woonsocket RI and surrounding areas -Provide education, outreach, and information on disaster preparedness -Participate in recognizing and assisting veterans and their families with clothing, heating assistance, weatherization benefits, nutritional information, SNAP, and other community and government resources -Partner with persons of disabilities from one on one or small group activities in the catchment area

Description

Weatherization and Boiler Assessment BVCAP’S weatherization program is available to assist income eligible residents in upgrading their homes to reduce heating bills by providing house energy efficiency services to households that already qualify for LIHEAP. Some of the services include installing insulation as needed and boiler repair/replacement. Health and safety measures are also provided, such as, installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, reducing drafts, and providing proper ventilation. Tenants with landlord approval and homeowners are eligible for weatherization.

Description

Summer Youth Employment Program: BVCAP directs a six week program operated between July and August for youth ages fourteen and eighteen. The program provides youth with an internship work opportunities in local businesses, public facilities, and non-profit agencies. These experiences provide youth with hands on opportunities to develop skills they will need upon entering the work force. Youth work 16 hours a week at internship sites and are required to participate in a 4 hour paid workshop on Fridays. Youth receive wages weekly. The youth readiness workshop focuses on teaching basic job skills such as resume writing, interviews, and personal career tests.

Description

Project Undercover believes that every child has the right to be clean and dry. That’s why we provide free diapers, socks, underwear and baby wipes to help the approximately 45,000 children throughout Rhode Island living in poverty. Clients are able to receive one package of diapers every 30 days for each child under the age of 3. Diapers are available for pickup on weekdays between 9am and 1pm. LeadSafe Homes Program Available to homeowners and tenants with young children or those who are planning to renovate or remodel their homes, our LeadSafe Homes initiative can help eliminate the dangers of lead in your home. A case manager can assist homeowners in obtaining a Certificate of Conformance, Lead Safe Certificate, and funding to make their homes lead safe. Lead Poisoning Case Management The BVCAP Lead Center provides non-medical case management to families with lead-poisoned children, assisting the families with tools, resources and education needed to reduce the child’s Blood Lead Level to a medically acceptable level. A case manager is also available to help a homeowner apply for the RI Housing LeadSafe Homes Program.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides opportunities for seniors 55+ to share their time, experience, knowledge and interests with others in the community. RSVP volunteers are connected to networks of seniors who use their skills to provide services and support throughout the community. RSVP volunteers: -Provide administrative support, nutrition education, SNAP resources, and community referrals for hunger -Deliver meals to home bound clients 5 days a week -Provide home visits and companionship to homebound clients -Participate with the Wellness Initiatives exercise trainings such as armchair aerobics, water aerobics, line dancing, and tap dancing at Senior Services in Woonsocket -Assist in ongoing recruitment, enrollment, and program management of A Matter of Balance (an Evidence Based Fall Prevention Program) -Collect, sort, recycle, reuse, or repurpose recyclable materials in Woonsocket RI and surrounding areas -Provide education, outreach, and information on disaster preparedness -Participate in recognizing and assisting veterans and their families with clothing, heating assistance, weatherization benefits, nutritional information, SNAP, and other community and government resources -Partner with persons of disabilities from one on one or small group activities in the catchment area

Description

Weatherization and Boiler Assessment BVCAP’S weatherization program is available to assist income eligible residents in upgrading their homes to reduce heating bills by providing house energy efficiency services to households that already qualify for LIHEAP. Some of the services include installing insulation as needed and boiler repair/replacement. Health and safety measures are also provided, such as, installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, reducing drafts, and providing proper ventilation. Tenants with landlord approval and homeowners are eligible for weatherization.

Description

Summer Youth Employment Program: BVCAP directs a six week program operated between July and August for youth ages fourteen and eighteen. The program provides youth with an internship work opportunities in local businesses, public facilities, and non-profit agencies. These experiences provide youth with hands on opportunities to develop skills they will need upon entering the work force. Youth work 16 hours a week at internship sites and are required to participate in a 4 hour paid workshop on Fridays. Youth receive wages weekly. The youth readiness workshop focuses on teaching basic job skills such as resume writing, interviews, and personal career tests.
