A form of diabetes generally diagnosed in children and young adults that occurs when the pancreas produces no insulin or too little insulin to regulate blood sugar levels appropriately. Onset of Type 1 diabetes (formerly known as juvenile diabetes) is generally fairly abrupt and is often accompanied by weight loss which develops over several days.
