A blood disorder that may be inherited or acquired in which the body's bone marrow stops producing enough new blood cells due to damage to the bone marrow’s stem cells. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid or irregular heart beat, pale skin, frequent or prolonged infections, unexplained or easy bruising, nosebleeds and bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding from cuts, skin rash, dizziness and headaches. The condition can develop suddenly or slowly, tends to worsen over time and, in severe cases, can result in death unless its cause is found and treated. Treatment may include blood transfusions, blood and marrow stem cell transplants and medication.
