Opinion/Editorial Development

Taxonomy Code: TP-6700.5200-700

Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses or other groups write and place "op-ed" pieces or editorial responses in local, state or national newspapers or other news media. Op-ed pieces are guest commentaries written by syndicated columnists or local citizens, experts, organizational leaders and others which provide an in-depth and often personal perspective on issues considered to be of current importance. Tasks may include developing positive working relationships with editorial staff, determining the content focus of the article, identifying the right news organization, contacting the editorial page editor or chief editor to discuss the piece, ensuring that timing for the piece is appropriate, writing a focused, provocative article of approximately 750 words, choosing the right author(s) for collaboration (e.g., a readily recognized board member), formatting the piece, preparing a cover memo or letter, transmitting the piece and following up to determine whether the article has been accepted and when it will run.
