Potassium Iodide Distribution Programs
Taxonomy Code: TH-1700.6400-650
Programs that distribute potassium iodide (KI) pills that people can take in the wake of a radiological emergency such as a nuclear power accident to protect against thyroid-related health problems. Radioactive iodine, one of the contaminants that can be released in a nuclear accident or similar event, can increase the risk of thyroid cancer. The pills, which block exposure to the contaminant, are generally safe but can cause health problems for individuals with existing thyroid conditions or allergies to iodine or shellfish.
