Governor Offices

The office of individual who has been elected as the chief executive official of a state in the United States and territories of the United States. Governors serve terms ranging from two to four years; are usually restricted to two terms in office; and possess veto powers, powers to call special sessions of the legislature, powers to grant pardons and reprieves, and many other appointive, administrative and financial powers.

State Comptroller Offices

The office of the individual who has been elected to manage the financial affairs of the state and oversee the fiscal affairs of local governments. The comptroller in most states is responsible for tax collection, payroll, accounting, financial reporting and estimating revenue for the state; and, depending on the configuration of statewide offices in a particular state, may act as the custodian of state funds and investments, conduct audits of state agencies or manage the retirement system. In some states, the responsibilities of the state comptroller and the state treasurer are combined in a single office (treasurer or comptroller); and responsibilities of the state comptroller in one state may be assigned to the state treasurer in another. In a few states, a separate state tax commissioner is responsible for tax collection.

State Insurance Commissioner Offices

The office of the individual who has been elected to regulate, investigate and audit insurance business to ensure that companies remain solvent and meet their obligations to insurance policyholders. In Florida, this responsibility is handled by the combined State Treasurer and State Insurance Commissioner office.

State Legislature Offices

The offices of elected members of the body that is responsible for making statutory laws for the state. In most states, the legislature is bicameral in structure, usually consisting of two branches, i.e., an upper house (e.g., State Senate) and a lower house (e.g., State Assembly or State Representatives).

State Secretary of State Offices

The office of the individual who has been elected to serve as the state's chief elections and corporations officer with responsibility for overseeing elections, filing and verifying initiatives and referendums, registering and licensing private corporations, overseeing the filing and disclosure of campaign and lobbyist financial information, commissioning notaries public, collecting and preserving historical records, managing the public archives, regulating the use of the state seal and/or handling other designated special duties.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Offices

The office of the individual who has been elected to serve as the administrative head and chief executive officer of the state's department of education with responsibility for supervising elementary, secondary, adult and other education programs within the state; establishing, maintaining and inspecting public schools; developing course content standards; supporting effective professional development programs for teachers and other educators; holding local educational agencies accountable for student achievement; enforcing provisions of the state's education code; and providing leadership and resources to support continuing reform and improvement in public education for students at all levels.

State Tax Commissioner Offices

The office of the individual who has been elected to exercise general supervision over all assessors of general property or other taxes, over township, county and city boards of equalization and over all other assessing officers with the objective of ensuring compliance with the laws of the state. In California, the State Board of Equalization, a four member elected commission chaired by the State Controller (the 5th, ex-officio member), handles these responsibilities.
