Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on ego psychology, the school of psychology that represents the modern evolution of Freudian thought. Whereas Freud concentrated on the drives and the id, ego psychology focuses on the reality-coping aspects of the ego. Neurosis arises out of a developmental arrest prior to the age of three wherein the individual perceives other people as either all good or all bad. The task of the therapist is to integrate the person's self-system and interpersonal system so that the individual is able to experience him or herself and others as whole people containing both good and bad parts.
