Services: Provides representation for special needs children in the care of DCYF who do not have parents able to make educational decisions for them.
The Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities, founded at Rhode Island College in 1993, is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). UCEDDs are evidence driven and designed to advance policies, practices and research that improve the health, education, social and economic well-being of people with disabilities, their families, and their communities.
The mission of the Sherlock Center is to promote membership of individuals with disabilities in school, work and the community.
The Sherlock Center is a member of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), a national network of 67 interdisciplinary centers advancing policy and practice for and with individuals with developmental and other disabilities, their families and communities. The Sherlock Center is also a LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) Program.
The Sherlock Center partners with state and national agencies, schools, institutes of higher education and community providers to offer:

Description
Educational Advocate Program An Educational Advocate is a person appointed by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) to make educational decisions for students with disabilities who are in the care of the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and whose parents are not available to act on their behalf.
Hours
Mon-Fri 8:30AM-4:00PM
Eligibility
All students with disabilities who are in the care of the state as a result of the filing of abuse, neglect or dependency petitions.

Intake Procedure
The DCYF caseworker must make a referral to DCYF's Educational Resource Coordinator

The Sherlock Center encourages people with disabilities to dream, to try and to succeed. Work provides opportunities for personal growth, self-sufficiency, and an improved quality of life. To succeed, people with disabilities need information, resources and competent support systems. The Sherlock Center offers several comprehensive training programs specifically for direct support professionals, managers, job developers, and educators supporting individuals with disabilities to become meaningfully employed. Individualized technical assistance is also available by request in the following areas: Person Centered Career Planning Assessment Strategies Job Development & Placement Job Support Community Resources Systems Change & Program Development
