Tay-Sachs Screening
Taxonomy Code: LF-4900.8500
Programs that determine whether potential parents will have children with Tay-Sachs disease, a genetic disorder that results in intellectual disabilities, by testing for the presence of the enzyme hexosamidas A which, if present in either parent, rules out the possibility of their children having the disease. If the mother is pregnant, amniotic fluid may be tested for the presence of the enzyme. If it is absent, the child will be born with Tay-Sachs unless the pregnancy is terminated.
