Founded in 1922 and renamed honoring Dr. King in 1968, The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families and seniors. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school age kids, supports families, and engages seniors all across Newport County.
Hunger Programs include: an on-site food pantry providing access to non-perishable food items, frozen meat, fresh produce, bread and household and care items for Newport County residents; mobile food pantry rotates throughout the month to different neighborhoods; Food 2 Friends is a monthly service for home bound neighbors unable to come to MLK's on-site food pantry; on-site breakfast program serving hot meals weekdays 7:30 am - 9:30 am at their Edward Street Entrance (eat in or take out); Lunch Program runs Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, first come, first served; Produce to the People fresh produce distribution to anyone in Newport County, offered June through September; and holiday and Thanksgiving food program for Newport county residents, with registration usually opening in late September.
Education Programs include: licensed Preschool for children 3-5 years of age; After school Academy for students from kindergarten to 4th grade (-call for costs/DHS childcare subsidies are accepted and scholarships are available for families with demonstrated need); and Summer Adventure Camp, an 8-week literacy, science and math-based program for children entering 1st grade through those entering 5th grade. Call for costs for each of these three education programs. DHS childcare subsidies are accepted and scholarships are available for families with demonstrated need.
Community Programs include: Nutrition, Education & Cooking provides nutrition counseling and cooking demonstrations; Physical Fitness classes; HIV/Hep C Testing and VNS Clinic; Wellness classes; senior lunch & learns the first and third Wednesday of each month; and MLK Friends lunches and dinners held monthly. They also run a collaborative overnight warming center from mid-January through mid March (call for exact dates). Holiday Help includes Thanksgiving and holiday food pantry and Santa's Workshop which offers registered families the opportunity to choose holiday gifts and toys for their children.
